Colgate University provides an unusually wide range of opportunities to study archaeology both on and off campus. Students have participated in archaeological programs and excavations with Colgate faculty around the world, including Mexico, Central and South America, Italy, and right here in Central New York. Through such experiences, students gain a broad perspective of different disciplinary approaches to the study of the ancient world. For example, courses and experiences in archaeology are offered in the Departments of the Classics and Sociology and Anthropology, the Native American Studies Program, and the Longyear Museum of Anthropology.

Also, during the academic year, a lecture series, titled "Lunch Among The Ruins," is offered, featuring presentations by faculty, students, and visitors on various topics in archaeology. Recent alumni have pursued archaeology at the graduate level, on Watson and Fulbright Fellowships, in an administrative position at the Archaeological Institute of America, and in careers in teaching, cultural resource management, state government, and the National Park Service.
