The faculty
members of the department have expertise in diverse areas that
include cell and molecular biology, organismal and evolutionary biology, terrestrial and aquatic ecology, plant and animal physiology, and animal behavior. The Department is
housed in Olin Hall, which was completely renovated in 1989-1990, greatly expanding our
teaching laboratories and providing separate research laboratories for
each faculty member.
The department has been very successful in attracting generous outside funding for
innovative curricular projects, as well as major equipment for teaching and
research. In the
past five years, this has included over 2 million dollars in research and teaching grants
primarily from the National Science
Foundation, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and
the Keck Foundation. Some of our curricular projects have gained national recognition,
such as our collaborative laboratory projects between courses at the introductory and
intermediate levels. Faculty members are active researchers and engage students in
investigative laboratories or field projects as an integral part of their science education.
Biology is within Colgate's Division
