Department Office: 221 Alumni Hall
| In the sciences,
social sciences and humanities, each discipline has its own way of
speaking, writing and making knowledge. Composition courses offer
students a specialized introduction to language conventions and modes
of composing both in and across the disciplines, as well as general
instruction in expository writing. The Interdisciplinary Writing Department
provides courses in a wide range of applied language skills. In addition,
the department offers theoretical composition courses that encourage
an understanding of the ways in which language shapes and is shaped
by culture. |

The department administers a Writing Center, which
is open to all students in the university. The writing center provides
drop-in peer tutoring help with any writing project.
