The Colgate University Department of Educational Studies is a small department offering both undergraduate programs and a M.A.T. graduate program.
Education may be studied as a discipline within the social sciences or it may be a vehicle by which one can become a professional teacher. The study of education as a discipline within a liberal arts context may lead to a concentration or a minor in Educational Studies, whereas the study of education for teacher preparation leads to New York State certification as a childhood/elementary or adolescence/secondary school teacher. It is important to note that at Colgate, concentrating in education and preparing to become a teacher are two different things.
