  Background of Poetry Series

More information about the poetry reading series over the years.  Colgate's English department presents a poetry reading series every spring and features a broad range of poets.  In recent years the series has included Ai, Robert Pinsky, Sharon Olds, Nobel Prize winners Derek Walcott and Seamus Heaney, Bruce Smith, Colette Inez, Sapphire, Les Murray, Michael Harper, Marilyn Hacker, Matthew Cooperman, Ellen Hinsey, Michael Burkard and many others.  The readings feature conversation with the poet, book signing, and often a social gathering where students can talk with the visiting poet in a more convivial atmosphere.  The Colgate reading series was started in the 1960s under the direction of Professor Emeritus, poet and translator Bruce Berlind and is continued under the direction of Peter Balakian, poet, memoirist, and Rebar Professor of the Humanities in the Department of English.
