| The Geology Department's field program has been a staple of the Colgate curriculum since 1970, and the present-day version involves students in seven weeks of intensive field study. In the last five years, our eastern component (Champlain Valley, Adirondacks, Catskills, Finger Lakes and Ontario Shoreline) has been followed by a trip to the western United States, which includes a two-week "canyon loop" tour of the Front Range, Rocky Mountains near Denver, Colorado National Monument, Canyonlands, Arches, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon and Zion Parks in Utah, and the north rim of the Grand Canyon. The last two weeks of the western leg involves students in intensive mapping of complex geology in the San Juan Mountains, in southwestern Colorado near Silverton. |
