Off Campus Study Opportunities
Geology students and faculty are active participants in four Colgate off-campus study groups: at Cardiff University in
Wales and the University of Manchester (both in the United Kingdom), and at the University of Wollongong in Australia
(the Fall program emphasizes environmental studies; the Spring term is for geology and other science concentrators).
At each of these universities, participating students select from a variety of courses across all disciplines, including
those in geology that can fulfill concentration or graduation requirements. Geology professors directing these study
groups have designed special field trips to classic sites of geologic interest so that students can achieve a global
perspective of the earth and environmental sciences. For example in March 2010, 15 Colgate students on the Australia
II Study Group (directed by Connie Soja) spent four days in northern Queensland exploring two World Heritage sites –
the Great Barrier Reef and rainforests of the Wet Tropics – for Connie’s course on “The Fragile Edge: Australia’s Reefs
and Rainforests.” Students reported that the field trip was “transformative” in learning about inhabitants and processes
at work in these imperiled ecosystems.
