Greetings! It's been a real pleasure joining the Colgate Geology Department this past year,
and I'd like to thank everyone who's made it such a wonderful experience. It seems that
everywhere I go I meet another Colgate geology alum; I even ran into a distinguished alumnus
in Puerto Rico last April (Allan Dennis), which was great!
Last year I had the chance to teach several courses, including instrumental methods,
Megageology, and even a freshman seminar on the advent of the atomic bomb. This year, I've
begun a new course on volcanology, with a great group of students.
Last summer, three Colgate students came with me as part of a field excursion to the Galapagos
Islands, a current focus of my research. We were working on two main projects, one to
investigate the evolution of a particularly puzzling island in the archipelago (Genovesa),
and another to collect 360-degree panoramic images of volcanic and biologic phenomena to
contribute to an instructional CD-ROM. Currently, all three students are working on independent
study projects related to the samples we collected, with an emphasis on petrologic and
geochemical analysis.
