ALUMNI NEWS NOTES
Class of 2001

Jordan Angell: Hello All, I am currently in med. school at George Washington in DC. Loving DC, great city! Hope everyone is well and I miss Lathrop Hall! Jordan
(submitted 11/03)

Dan Grady: I couldn't let Otto be the only member of the class of 2001 alumni page...

I have been in Portland, Oregon for the past two years working at Enviroforensics, which is in the environmental consulting industry. I am moving away from the Left Coast this summer to become a sixth grade earth and environmental science teacher at the Hackley School in Tarrytown, New York. I am already getting some great feedback from many parents who are scared to death that I have been given the opportunity to mold their young children's minds. (submitted 6/03)

Adam Greenhut: I am currently an associate in the Insurance & Financial Institutions Group at Sidley Austin LLP in New York, focusing on M&A, corporate finance, securities and reinsurance for the insurance industry. Hope everyone is doing well! (submitted May 2008)

Just finished my first year of law school at Fordham, and am now working for a federal judge in Manhattan. (submitted 6/03)

Emily Hirshorn: As I write this, I am preparing for a three week adventure in Vietnam! I've heard there are some cool rocks there! Otherwise, I'm still in Philly - I run the afterschool and summer programs at a school in West Philly - I've been there for 4 years. I really love my job. I'm also working part-time on a masters in Non-Profit Leadership at Penn. I bought a house last summer and have been mosaicing the walls of my "backyard".

No marriages or babies to announce - best I can offer is that I adopted two guinea pigs - they are EXTREMELY cute!

I've been dying to get back out west to OC country - maybe next summer - would love to visit some geology buddies along the way!! Hope you're all well! (submitted July 2010)

Hey everyone! I just moved back to Philly from Baton Rouge where I spent the last two years teaching 5th grade (all subjects) through Teach for America. Louisiana was AMAZING (even tho' there ain't no rocks!), but I'm taking a break from teaching this year - trying to explore some of my other interests as teaching seemed to take over my life completely! I think Dan's got the right idea just teaching earth science! - (Dan you'll have to let me know how it goes). I feel pretty removed from the geology world, but maybe I can get in touch with my rocky side this year. I hope you all are well!

Kate Kimberly: Hey everyone, it's been a while... I'm sure much has changed for everyone and I'm no exception. After graduation I moved to Jackson Hole, WY to clear my head. I inadvertantly became a temporary ski bum. To support my 6 day a week skiing habit, I managed a restaurant, worked in a ski shop and wrote a column called "Geology From the Tram"--which was basically a dumbed up version of the geology of the Tetons and Jackson Hole written for vacationers and gapers. In March of 2003 I was badly injured in a backcountry skiing accident and had to leave Jackson to rehab and recover. In the summer of 2003 I moved to NYC with my boyfriend of 6 years, Adam Shapiro Class of '02. Living in an apartment just north of Greenwich Village, I continued to rehab my injuries while taking a few non-fiction writing classes at NYU. In May of 2004 we moved back out west to Boulder, CO where I founded a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation to benefit spinal cord injury research and to help those living with spinal cord injury continue to live active, rewarding lives despite the challenges they face. Adam and I currently live just south of Boulder with our cat Panic and our Golden Retriever Bela (as in Bela Fleck), who I am training to be a service dog. I continue to work full-time as Executive Director for the Kate Kimberly Foundation and enjoy taking advantage of everything that the mountains of the west have to offer. Hope everyone is doing well, if you're ever in the Boulder area look me up. (submitted 11/05)

Rob Otto: Leaving WHOI in August for my new home in Virginia Key (40 mins north of Key Largo). Will be teaching an Introduction to Geology class while pursuing my PhD at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. My thesis will concentrate on remapping the Bahamas using isotope geochemistry and remote sensing. (submitted 6/03)

Lisa Schulte: Hey everyone! It's been a while since I've updated most Colgaters on my life after college. But, I must say that reading what people have been up to has inspired me, as well as brought a smile to my face as I remember all the times we've spent together. Currently (well at least for the remainder of November) I am living in Wisconsin Dells, WI, working as a teacher/naturalist at an environmental education center. Among other things, my job includes explaining the geologic formation of the sandstone bluffs as I lead hikes and caving expeditions in the area, yelling at my students in french as they paddle voyageur-style (french fur-traders) in the Wisconsin River, and handling Beauty, our red-tailed hawk, and Stella, our barred-owl in front of a roomful of bug-eyed sixth graders. I came to "the Dells" in a pursuit to get back into more of an environmentally-geared educator role. Since graduation I have become involved in outdoor/adventure ed for people with disabilities. Specifically, during the winter I am an adaptive ski-instructor, and through the summer I have been leading a variety of trips including hiking, camping, rafting, and canoeing for people with disabilities. I love it, and I have had some very inspiring and moving experiences. However, a year and a half of strictly adventure education has caused me to yearn for the complete package of environmental and experiential ed. In December I will move back to Crested Butte, Colorado where I will once again spend the winter teaching skiing. My dream is to eventually open my own environmental/experiential education program. But, we'll see! (submitted 11/03)

Bill Sweeney: Wow, it really has taken me a while to send in an update. I figure if Shulte can get around to it, so can I. I apparently live next to Grady in Tarrytown, NY. Who knew. Dan, if you read this shoot me an email (wsweeney@vertexeng.com), b/c I have no idea how to get in touch with you short of running into you at Coffee Labs. I have been in the construction management business since I bailed on environmental consulting. Yeah, who knew, but I have been building huge buildings in NYC for a year now and really enjoy it. I still think I'll be back in school soon in one way or another. I blow up garbage cans Karen Harpp style every once in a while for some kids groups, which is always fun. I havn't seen any geology folks for a while, so if you are ever in NYC send me an email, I'd love to hear what everyone is up to...Bill (submitted 12/03)

Katherine (Williamson) Strange: Hi everyone- I am living in Houston, practicing oil and gas law, and trying not to die of heat exhaustion. Long live The Chief! (submitted 8/8/06)

Jann Vendetti: Was living + teaching English in Taiwan for 15 months. I am currently (and hopefully for the next 5 years) at UC Berkeley, in their Integrative Biology PhD program. Though its "Biology" by name, it's really paleontology in pseudo-disguise. Other aspects of geology (i.e. earthquakes) are influencing me on a regular basis. Good luck everyone and keep in touch!
