ALUMNI NEWS NOTES
Class of 2003

Joe Henderson: Greetings all! I think the last time I wrote in I was still teaching middle school Earth Science and loving it. While it still holds a special place in my heart, I have moved on to different endeavors. I was offered full-time doctoral work at the University of Rochester's Warner School of Education and Human Development where I am now studying full-time for a PhD in sustainability education. I work in science teacher development and conduct research in a number of areas from inquiry-based science teaching methods to how students understand the social aspects of environmental issues. I will begin my actual dissertation research in the fall when I begin studying how one school implements and understands a curriculum around issues of environmental and social sustainability. It's such a massive and exciting topic and I'd love to collaborate with any of you out in the world doing germane things. Hope that all is well! (submitted July 2010)

Hey kids! I hope that all is well in the land of rocks wherever you all are. I spent last year teaching earth science and special ed. biology, and I also coached baseball in Oxford, NY just down the road from Colgate. Many thanks to Bruce, Evan, and Emily for accomodating my Earth Science class field trip. You helped to motivate some marginal students to pursue college science and I am forever grateful. I have decided to leave Oxford, despite having a great time, to further my education at the University of Rochester where I am currently in a M.A.T. Earth Science program for the next year. I spent the summer as an education camp director in the Adirondacks with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. I basically took high schoolers into the wilderness areas in the Adirondacks and even randomly ran into a very foodless Jason Williams coming out of the High Peaks at the ADK Loj. Watch out for the bears if you happen to be up there. Anyhoo, swing me an email or a phone call and let me know how things are going! (submitted 8/04)

Julia Shackford: I've been working as a project geologist and project manager for an environmental consulting firm in the metro NY area for the past 5 years. This coming January, I'll be starting a PhD in Oceanography at Texas A&M and I'm very excited for the move! (submitted July 2010)
