Distinctions: Colgate Presidential Scholar in the Department of Geology (2003-05); Distinguished speaker for the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (1994-99); The Sears-Roebuck Foundation Teacher Excellence and Campus Leader Award (1991); Phi Eta Sigma Professor of the Year (1986); Recipient of Congressional Medal for Antarctic Service (1970)
