Each summer the department offers Geology 320: Techniques of Field Geology, a five-week course
that provides training in basic field skills essential for the professional geologist, along with an understanding
of the geologic history of various regions of the US. In addition to the O.C., geology students and faculty are active participants
in three Colgate off-campus study groups: at the University of Wales and the University of Manchester (both in the United Kingdom), and
at the University of Wollongong in Australia. Other off-campus learning opportunities include affiliations with Sea Semester
in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and the Maritime Studies Program at Mystic Seaport, Connecticut,
as well as one to two-week-long field trips related to specific courses. In the past, these course-related trips have included
such locations as the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, the southwestern US, the Cascade Volcanoes, the Canary Islands, South America and Hawaii.
In addition to courses that are offered abroad, off-campus experiences are also available through collaborative research with Colgate Geology
faculty members or through the Keck Consortium.
