Postgraduate Opportunities
|
Employment opportunities in many geology fields are excellent. Although a
number of geology careers require advanced academic degrees, many Colgate graduates have secured
gainful employment in the environmental sector immediately upon graduation, in particular working for
groundwater technology or environmental engineering firms. After graduation, many geology
concentrators attend graduate programs typically with full funding for either a masters degree or a Ph.D.
in geology, hydrology, oceanography, paleontology, environmental sciences, or environmental policy and
law. Recent graduates are studying geology at Harvard University, University of Chicago, University
of California at Davis, University of Illinois, Duke University, University of South Carolina,
University of Massachusetts, University of Kansas, Boston University, Rice University and UCLA.
Other graduates of the program have successful careers in business, environmental fieldwork, teaching and school administration, public health, museums, and in mining and petroleum-related fields. Recent graduates have accepted positions such as photography assistant at National Geographic, technician at Woods Hole, secondary school teacher, geophysical technician in Antarctica, legal aide in Washington, D.C., securities analyst, oil company employee or consultant to the petroleum industry, and sales manager for a scientific supply company. Still others are employed as geophysical technicians for the U.S. Geological Survey, curator with the Smithsonian Institution, technician in the Marine Ecology Laboratory, captain of a commercial fishing vessel, professional football player, and professors at the University of Illinois, University of Southern California, University of Minnesota, University of Georgia, SUNY Binghamton, and Westminster College. |
