Connie Soja Receives GSA Grant to Co-convene Pardee Keynote Symposium
Professor Connie Soja won a competitive bid and was awarded a small grant from the Geological
Society of America to co-convene with Robert Riding a Pardee Keynote Symposium at its annual
meeting in Denver, CO (November 2004). Their half-day session focused on "ADVERSITY, ADVANTAGES,
OPPORTUNITIES: PHANEROZOIC STROMATOLITES AS 'SURVIVOR' VS. 'DISASTER' TAXA." Eleven speakers
contributed to this interdisciplinary forum, which reexamined the role of stromatolites in
Phanerozoic ecosystems, particularly the importance of post-Cryptozoic microbial communities;
the biotic and abiotic agents that favored their development, decline, and preservation; and
their co-evolutionary history with metazoans.
