Students and Music

We thought you'd find it interesting to read some "real student" answers to a questionnaire here:

Why did you choose to come to Colgate?

(pic)"I wanted a small liberal arts school and when I came to Colgate, I fell in love with it."

"It had a reputation as a very fine academic institution and seemed like it had tons to offer me as far as activities and extra-curricular activities. When I visited, it seemed like an extremely lively and fun place to live."

"Good academic reputation; close to home; beautiful"

"I liked the small size and felt that an intimate classroom atmosphere would be best. The overall academic standards, its proximity to my home, and its beautiful campus also helped me to decide."

"Small liberal arts college with great faculty, beautiful campus, plenty of opportunities"

"The academic reputation and gamut of opportunities to get involved in all facets of the University were too good to pass up."

Describe one or two of your most memorable experiences with music at Colgate.

(pic)"Some of my best memories are of performances, both ones in which I performed and ones for which I was an audience member. My favorite performance was probably that of Emanuel Ax -- I think it's wonderful that Colgate attracts such talented performers."

"Playing Schumann's 'cello concerto in orchestra with guest soloist, Bion Tsang. Also receiving a summer research grant for composition."

"My senior recital -- for all the work I put into it partially -- was very memorable. The Music Department was quite supportive and worked to make it a very special event. Of course, the performance of the Mozart REQUIEM in my freshman year was quite exciting, as was the European tour with the Chorus at the end of my first year."

"Playing the horn trio in Beethoven's SYMPHONY NO. 3 (Eroica)"

"It is my many positive experiences as a whole which provide a solid "musical experience" at Colgate."

What would you like to say about music to an anonymous Web-cruiser who is considering Colgate?

(pic)"The Music Department here is more like a family than a department. We welcome everyone who's interested in music with open arms, as if to say, "Come, you're part of the family now." The Department takes good care of its students, and the students take good care of each other."

"Music can be what you want it to be at Colgate. There are people, like myself, who are involved in many different types of musical groups and organizations while studying music. However, there are many people who are involved for the pure enjoyment and it is just one activity in their busy lives. The opportunity for a non-music concentrator to become as involved as they like is a rare one at a University. I believe that's one thing that makes Colgate's Music Department special."

"Music at Colgate can be as serious or as laid-back as you want it to be."

"Do it as a hobby or a major. Music will enrich your life."

"I'd like to encourage the anonymous Web-cruiser to read about (and meet!) our faculty. Colgate's Music Department is graced with accomplished, wise, relaxed, wonderful people who have made music-making a joy for me and many others."

"If you are interested in a low pressure institution with individual attention and numerous opportunities to perform, Colgate Music would be an excellent choice for you."

"We are fortunate to have such an outstanding music faculty at such a small school. The faculty is eager for me to learn and the atmosphere is not competitive. I've really felt that the size of the music department is a benefit because of the personal attention and the small classes."
