NAIP is the acronym for the North American Indian Project. It is affiliated with the American Indian Center in Syracuse (740 North Salina Street). NAIP is a non-profit organization founded by a group of concerned Native American people who felt it would be nice to have a center where urban Native Americans could come and be a source of support and information for each other.
The NAIP Summer Program at Colgate University is in its second year. It is the result of the collaborative efforts of Nancy Taranto, who is a board member for NAIP, Kim Sacco, who graduated from Colgate University in 1993 and is the Director of the NAIP, and Professor Chris Vecsey. NAIP runs a variety of other programs, including Prison Outreach, an after school program for students in Syracuse school district, and sponsors speakers. Last fall, NAIP made arrangements for Jane Middleton-Moz to speak at the Native American Center. Jane is the author of a number of books regarding family, women's wellness, and violence within the family unit. Her book, The Boiling Point addresses the high cost of unhealthy anger to individuals and society. |
