F. Scott Kraly earned his B.A. in psychology at the University of Notre Dame and
his Ph.D. in physiological psychology at The Johns Hopkins University. The focus
of his laboratory research is the neuroendocrine control or ingestive behavior,
in particular, the physiological mechanisms by which eating elicits drinking
behavior. Many of the students working in his laboratory learn various surgical
procedures including manipulations of the gastrointestinal tract and stereo
surgery to implant a cannula into the brain of a rat. Students conduct
experiments in which drugs are used to manipulate neurochemical mechanisms to
study their involvement in eating and drinking. Results of experiments are
reported at the annual meeting of the Society of Neuroscience. No fewer than
twenty-five Colgate undergraduates have been co-authors of published journal
articles reporting the results of experiments conducted in Kraly's laboratory.
Papers have appeared in various journals including Nature, American
Journal of Physiology, Behavioral Neuroscience, Physiology and
Behavior, Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior, and
Psychological Review.
When not working Dr. Kraly might be found playing. He is a drummer and a
not-so-gracefully-aging athlete. He plays basketball and handball. He also can
be found driving great distances to hear his favorite musicians perform,
including the Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones,
and Tribal Tech. If you're looking to trade tape recordings of live
performances of bands such as these, stop in to see him.
