Professor Aveni was named Professor of the Year in 1982 by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, Washington, DC. He is internationally known for his research into ancient Mesoamerican astronomy. He has written more than 200 articles and 15 books on the subject of Maya temples and has given talks on these subjects at universities all over the world.
