Cabin Fever Festival

Saturday, March 5 2005

Sponsored by the Hamilton Initiative

Village Green, Hamilton, NY

The Colgate Physics Club participated by giving physics demonstrations in honor of the World Year of Physics.  The demonstrations pictured below are liquid nitrogen volcanoes and cooling balloons in liquid nitrogen.

1) It all starts with a sturdy   garbage can full of water. 2) Students then fill soda bottles with nitrogen and cap them tight

3) The soda bottle is tied to a brick and dropped into the garbage can.

4) Hurry up and get back before the explosion! 5) Voila!  The pressure in the soda bottle caused it to erupt in the water.

6) We liked it so much the first time, we are doing it again!

7) Success again!

8) This time the bottle cap shot through the side of the garbage can!

9) A closer view of the hole in the side of the can.

THANKS TO OUR WONDERFUL CREW FOR AN EXCITING DISPLAY.....FUN FOR ALL!
