2002-2003
On Saturday April 26, The Astronomical Society of New York held its spring scientific meeting at Colgate. It included invited and contributed talks presented by faculty, graduate and undergraduate students from institutions throughout the state. Ian Hoffman '98 was one of the invited presenters. Jeyhan Kartaltepe '03 received an award for the best undergraduate research paper. She also delivered an invited talk on the subject of her research, "The Multiple Timescales of Optical Variability of the Blazar 3C279 During the 2001-2002 Outburst."

Kiko Galvez became Chair of the New York State Section of the American Physical Society (April 2003).
Symposium on March 29, 2003 in honor of Charlie Holbrow's retirement.
Dr. Kenneth Segall hired as an Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy. Ken is an Applied Physicist who plans to study nonlinear phenomena using superconducting Josephson junctions. His appointment will start in the Fall of 2003. Welcome Ken!
Charlie Holbrow becomes President of the American Association of Physics Teachers for the calendar year of 2003. (January 2003).
Beth Parks promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure. Congratulations Beth! (December 2002).

Colgate wins top award in Apparatus Competition at the annual meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers in Boise, ID (August 2002). Our two entries, "Black Box: Mass-Spring Laboratory Experiment" and "Archimedes: A Black Box Mechanics Laboratory" tied for second place.
Scott Lacey '96 returns to Colgate as Visiting Assistant Professor in Physics for the academic year 2002-03.
