Three-Dimensional Optical Confinement of Microscopic Objects

We report a simple and effective method for optically trapping microscopic objects. We have gained full three-dimensional control of 5 micron latex spheres. Additionally, we have used a single acoustical optical modulator in a computer controlled optical system which successfully traps and manipulates multiple objects in one dimension. We describe our system, the setup, results, and finally problems we faced while attempting to implement two acousto-optic modulators and scan the laser beam. |
