Each year the Department of Romance Languages conducts a study group at the University of Burgundy in Dijon where students live with host families. The month of January is devoted to intensive language study and cultural orientation. The curriculum includes advanced courses in literature, language and contemporary civilizations as well as electives. Field trips are organized to important cultural and historical sites in Paris, the Loire Valley and Provence. This program is open to juniors, and occasionally seniors, who possess sufficient language competence and maturity to participate. Prerequisites are FREN 301 and a 400-level literature course.
The study group experience is an integral part of the French and Spanish programs, and all qualified concentrators are expected to participate. Preference is given to concentrators and minor concentrators, but qualified non-concentrators are encouraged to apply.
The department has established the following policies for the Dijon study group: students must register for a full load of courses; students may not take a fifth course; all courses must be taken for a standard letter grade. Only in unusual circumstances will the department chair grant exceptions.
